In a year marked by economic uncertainty and significant industry challenges, the 2025 Western Roofing Expo in Las Vegas provided an oasis of solidarity and inspiration for over 4,300 roofing professionals. Attendees gathered at the Paris Las Vegas from September 28 to 30 to engage in essential networking and educational sessions designed to address pressing issues in the roofing industry.
Networking in Uncertain Times
The expo emerged as a vital platform for participants to collaborate and innovate in the face of various challenges, including labor shortages exacerbated by immigration policies. “This year's expo is crucial,” remarked Stan Robinson, the newly elected president of the Western States Roofing Contractors Association (WSRCA). Reflecting on the mood of the exhibitors and attendees, he noted, “Everyone is super positive. It gives me hope for the future.” This atmosphere of camaraderie enabled contractors to share ideas and strategies for overcoming obstacles and striving for excellence.
Empowering Through Education
Education was a cornerstone of the expo, with over 30 engaging sessions available over the two days. These covered a wide range of topics, including vital discussions on safety, leadership, and emerging technologies like artificial intelligence. Notably, three sessions addressed immigration concerns directly, aimed at helping roofing contractors navigate the complex landscape of hiring amid recent regulatory changes.
Philip Siegel, a construction attorney, led one such session, advising attendees on how to prepare for ICE audits and the implications of hiring practices. “We need to ensure that our workforce is compliant while also supporting our communities,” he asserted, highlighting the need for both legal awareness and ethical responsibility among contractors.
A Call for Unity and Action
During his keynote address, motivational speaker Mike Schlappi captivated the audience with his inspiring story of resilience after a life-altering injury. “If you can’t stand up, stand out,” he said, urging attendees to embrace their roles within a noble profession. Schlappi's message resonated deeply, reinforcing the expo's theme of perseverance in the face of adversity.
Furthermore, the annual auction raised substantial funds for the Davis Memorial Foundation scholarship fund, aimed at cultivating the next generation of skilled tradespeople. This strong commitment to education underlined the expo's importance in shaping the future workforce of the roofing industry.
Celebrating Achievement in the Roofing Community
The expo also recognized outstanding contributions within the roofing sector, inducting Greg Bloom into the WSRCA Hall of Fame. Bloom expressed his gratitude and reiterated the collective effort of those in the industry: “What we all do together is vital for our families and communities,” he said during an emotional acceptance speech.
As the event concluded with the popular Roofing Games competition, where skills and speed were tested, it became clear that the 2025 Western Roofing Expo was more than just a conference. It was a celebration of the powerful connections formed in challenging times and a bold step towards a brighter industry future.
